How Orange County does hybrids

  • Hybrids went mainstream in two years. The hybrid share of new cars registered in Orange County took four years to climb from about 6% to about 11%, then doubled to about 22% by 2025, and those 2024 and 2025 cars are already the biggest slice of the used hybrids for sale countywide.
  • The Camry test. Toyota made the Camry hybrid-only for 2025 and Orange County bought more of them, not fewer: about 5,200 new Camrys registered in 2025 against about 4,200 in 2023, up about 24%.
  • Biggest movers since 2023. The Honda Civic hybrid went from nothing to about 1,600 registrations in its first year, the Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid more than tripled, and the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 hybrids, already the county's two biggest, each added about a fifth.

About this data: These figures come from Bestest's analysis of California DMV vehicle registrations (January 1, 2026, the most recent available), California Energy Commission new-vehicle registrations for Orange County (2020 through 2025) and the US Department of Energy's national count of registered vehicles (year-end 2025). The DMV's hybrid count includes mild hybrids, so brand and model claims here come from the new-registration data.
